Safety in Perth and at Curtin

Perth is a safe, clean and vibrant city, consistently ranked in world’s top 10 most liveable cities. It provides a safe, secure and supportive environment in which to learn.

Staying safe in Perth city

The city is friendly and cosmopolitan, but when you travel to any destination it’s important to be aware of your environment and keep yourself safe. As an international student in Australia, you are subject to all state and federal laws.

Whether you are going to a festival, late night shopping, enjoying bars and nightspots or attending a sporting event, The City of Perth has many safeguards, including camera surveillance and patrols by police and rangers to make sure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

In Perth, WA Police are approachable and will always offer assistance. You can also telephone for police, firefighting or ambulance services in the event of an emergency.

There are safeguards on Perth’s magnificent beaches, with Surf Life Saving WA patrolling the beaches and providing rescue services. With many opportunities to advance your skills in the water, and water sports such as surfing, snorkelling, sailing and jet skiing, you’ll feel safe knowing there are lifesavers patrolling the city’s most famous beaches.

Hear what our students have to say about safety in Perth

“Once I went to the supermarket and I left my wallet there and when I came back to the supermarket it was exactly in the same place where I had left it…and then I started realising how different this city was. In everything that I do I feel safe.”

Laura Machuca Suarez, Colombia, Research Fellow, Corrosion Engineering

“Security is not a concern here. My wife can wake up early if she has something to do, we can arrive home late, and nothing can happen. Perth offers a high level of security.”

Gonzalo Ceron, Equador, Master of Petroleum Engineering
