In what areas is Curtin recognised as good university?

Curtin has a strong reputation both in Western Australia and Australia, especially with employers. Curtin is the largest university in WA and has more than 40,000 students. In total, Curtin has over 17,000 international students, more than many other large Australian universities including the University of Melbourne, Monash, RMIT, the University of NSW and the University of Sydney.

The University has strengths in many teaching and research areas. Curtin Business School is one of the largest business schools in Australia, with more than 15,000 enrolled students. The Division of Health Science offers a wide range of courses in popular areas such as public health, physiotherapy, pharmacy and biomedical sciences.

As a university of technology, Curtin also excels in all areas of engineering, including mining, chemical, petroleum, civil, mechanical and electrical. Our engineering graduates enjoy high rates of employment and strong starting salaries.

What are the long-term employment prospects in Perth?

Western Australia is currently undergoing an economic boom within the Mining and Resource industries. Major investments in mining and petroleum projects are creating many jobs across the state. There is currently a high demand for all types of engineers, including Mining, Chemical, Petroleum, Civil, Mechanical and Electrical.

The rapid growth of WA's population is also leading to secondary demand for professionals in health (doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists) and in the services industry (teachers, HR consultants, urban planners, accountants).

Western Australia currently contributes to one third of Australia's total exports, but represents only 10% of the national population. The West Australia Government continues to invest in the biotechnology industry, building on the substantial investment (in excess of A$80 million) that had already taken place in medical and agricultural research in WA. Curtin is well placed to produce graduates able to take advantage of these emerging opportunities.

What is Perth's weather like? What are people in Perth like?

One of the great misconceptions in India about Perth is that it's a hot, dry, industrial place. While it does get quite hot during short periods over summer, in general the climate is mild, particularly during the winter months. Perth's winters are generally warmer than those in other major Australian cities, and the city boasts more sunny days than any other Australian capital.

People in Perth love the outdoors (especially sport!). In regard to hospitality, Perth people are laid back, welcoming and happy to take the time to chat. Australians value friendship and support, so if you are having some sort of problem or difficulty there will always be somebody willing to help.

Are there Indian people in Perth?

Yes. While Perth does not have the large Indian communities found in other parts of Australia, there are Indian people living in Perth, many of whom hold good positions within the community. Perth has two Hindu temples, a Gardwara and mosques (including a prayer room on campus). The Indian community have regular get-togethers and there is a very active student group called DESI, which organises events and activities for students. As in other parts of the world, there are Indian restaurants in most parts of Perth.
