Taxation
Anyone opening a bank account or working in Australia requires a Tax File Number. A Tax File Number is a unique number issued to individuals and organisations to help the Tax Office administer tax and other Australian Government systems. It's one of your most important forms of identification in Australia. It's yours for life and keeping it secure is a good defence against identity theft. Applications can be made at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or via the online form on the ATO website.
Tax File Number application forms are also available during Orientation Week and instructions will be given about lodging the forms at the ATO in Perth.
International students are generally treated the same as Australian residents for taxation purposes, however they may be entitled to a rebate when returning home. Students should notify their bank once the Tax Office has allocated them a Tax File Number. Interest is charged at the maximum rate on accounts if a Tax File Number is not advised. While it is not compulsory to quote a TFN, without one you may pay more tax than necessary.
Please also note:
- Your TFN is valuable. Don't share it with friends and don't provide it on the internet when applying for work. Keep it secure.
- Applying for a TFN using false or other peoples' identity details, or misusing your TFN, can mean heavy fines or jail.
